It was built by the first Portuguese Viceroy in 1505. It is one of the famous historic sites in Kannur, Kerala. The fort is situated in the western region of Kannur town. Kannur Fort or Kannur kotta is another name of the fort. According to history, Ali Raja of kannur bought the fort from the Dutch. It was renovated by the British rulers, It was a British station in Malabar. There are various cells in fort house, Each one of which has a single hole was used for giving food to the prisoners. Archaeological Survey of India manages this place in the present. The fort is surrounded by a beautiful garden which makes very attractive to the fort. Prisoners were kept in the dark rooms and food was given to them through a small opening once a day. So tourists can know the history of St Angelo fort. It is only 4 km away from the Kannur city center. It takes about 12 to 14 minutes to reach the fort from kannur. You can take the autorickshaw from Kannur to reach there. St Angelo Fort is considered as one of the famous monuments in Kerala. Triangular shape fort made with red laterite stones makes it unique and attractive to the tourists here. Fort features Huge chapels, A prison, and an ammunition storehouse.
